I am so happy we got to meet Michael Pate for our second story on the "Evening News."

He is such an inspiration. Seeing him get out there, being brave about competing and trying to be fit even as an obese man ... I hope many more people follow his lead. As he says, it's not easy but today "I am better than I was yesterday but not quite what I want to be". What more can you ask for?

Go Michael!!!

"Not only do big boys try, but they also succeed in Michael Pate's inspirational story. Guts, determination, humor, failure and success can all be found in When Big Boys Tri. Michael Pate shows that athletics is not about the shoe contracts, million dollar deals and entourages. It is about overcoming your own fears and tying up your tri shoes one more time to accomplish your goal."

"I read Michael's book cover to cover in one sitting. It is highly motivating and I related to his journey in every chapter. His writing is filled with vivid word pictures and I found myself laughing out loud one minute and crying the next. I recommend this book to anyone who aspires to 'get in the race' rather than merely spectating."

This book is chocked full of great examples of how we Clydesdales thunder through you herd of gazelles with a smile and a laugh – because we can!  There are too many tremendously funny, telling, and touching moments to even begin to list them here, so go read the book.  Each chapter is punctuated by very relevant motivational quotes from Pate or some other famous athlete – and just that collection of quotes alone is worth the price of the book..

Do you think that you are absolutely crazy for thinking about doing a tri?  How many excuses are you finding to not go through with it?  Weight?  Lack of motivation?  How about the seemingly sheer absurdity of the thought?  Like “I can do a triathlon?”  Are not triathlons for elitist athletes who seemed to be bred just for this sport?  Absolutely not!!!  After reading Michael Pate’s book ‘When Big Boys Tri,’  all of your prior rationalizations to not do tri’s will be dispelled. From his days of watching his first triathlon as the sound man for a local triathlon to actually participating in his first, Michael will give you the inspiration and encouragement needed to do your first tri.
