Fantastic report from
CBS News that addresses an interesting topic. Can you be fat and fit?
Well, the Oldenfat guy -- and others -- say yes you can. And yes you
should!
The CBS report can be found
here, and discusses the story of of one
Michael Pate, who -- at 320 pounds -- is a triathlete. He also has a
book entitled "When
Big Boys Tri." You can buy it at Michael's website,
here.
According to the
CBS report, in the last three years, Michael has swum, run and biked
more than 20 races at about half the Olympic distance, which entails a
.9-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run. He's lost 70 pounds in
the process, but more important, he has lowered his blood pressure and
dramatically reduced his chance of heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
There has certainly been a lot of
hype about the obesity epidemic in the media lately. And while the
Oldenfat guy has written about the importance of maintaining a
healthy lifestyle and addressing
obesity issues in children, we need to be careful about two things: 1)
don't get caught up in the hype; and 2) don't get discouraged about your
weight.
If you have a few extra pounds -- which we all do (the Oldenfat guy
included) -- don't give in. Although the Oldenfat Guy won't be pictured
shirtless on the cover of
Men's Health anytime soon, he does have one simple mantra that he
urges you to adopt:
Get healthy, stay active and -- most important -- STAY IN THE GAME! Be
like Mike!
